LibrettoArchive has grown a lot over the years, and I wanted to find a simple way to show what the project is really about. The result is this short video.
At the heart of LibrettoArchive is the idea that opera becomes more meaningful when you can follow the words as well as the music.
The website brings original opera libretti and English translations together side by side, making it easier to prepare for a performance, study an opera at your own pace, or follow the text while listening to a recording.
The project also includes DM’s Opera Series, my bilingual paperback editions of complete opera libretti. There are now 33 published editions — and growing.
For the video, I wanted to show the project as it actually exists: the website, the books, the bilingual pages, and the experience of reading opera. It uses real LibrettoArchive material, actual editions from the series, and photographs I took in opera houses and while working with the books.
It is only one minute long, but it captures the idea behind the project better than a long explanation:
Knowing the words changes the way you hear opera.
