The Magic Flute: German–English Side-by-Side Libretto With Translation

A newly revised edition of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) is now available on LibrettoArchive — both online and in updated paperback form.

During this update, I made a careful editorial pass through the bilingual libretto. The work focused on correcting reported proofreading issues, cleaning up OCR artifacts, improving stage directions, standardizing terminology, and refining several German–English translation details.

Particular attention was given to:

• restoring damaged or incomplete German text caused by OCR errors,
• improving the accuracy of the English translation,
• correcting stage directions and theatrical details,
• standardizing German opera terminology,
• fixing verse-line formatting and punctuation,
• improving consistency between the German and English columns,
• and refining many smaller editorial details that affect readability.

Some corrections were minor typographical fixes, while others required deeper comparison with the original German libretto and traditional opera terminology. Several passages — especially stage directions and ceremonial scenes — were rewritten in English to better reflect the meaning and tone of the original text.

This revision was especially challenging because Die Zauberflöte combines spoken-theater style dialogue, symbolic Masonic language, comic scenes, and elevated poetic passages, all within the same work. Maintaining alignment between the German and English texts while preserving readability required extensive manual editing.
