Lucia di Lammermoor: Italian–English Side-by-Side Libretto With Translation

I have completed a major revision of the Italian–English side-by-side edition of Lucia di Lammermoor.

This update involved extensive proofreading and correction work across both the Italian and English texts. The libretto had accumulated numerous OCR artifacts, typographical errors, formatting problems, punctuation issues, and several inconsistent or incomplete translations that became especially noticeable in a side-by-side bilingual format.

The revised edition now includes:

  • corrected OCR mistakes in both Italian and English texts;
  • repaired stage directions and formatting issues;
  • improved punctuation and capitalization throughout the libretto;
  • corrections to character names and Italian spelling;
  • cleanup of intrusive markup artifacts introduced during earlier digitization;
  • refined English translations in several passages where the meaning was inaccurate or inconsistent.

Particular attention was given to the Mad Scene in Act III, one of the most delicate and textually demanding sections of the opera. Several corrupted stage directions and broken English phrases were restored, and repeated phrases such as “o bell’alma innamorata” were standardized for consistency throughout the final scenes.

Among the corrected issues were:

  • OCR distortions such as “Sii ascoltano” instead of “Si ascoltano”;
  • damaged stage directions containing stray markup symbols;
  • corrupted English phrases like “awaits usL.Oh”;
  • mistranslations and truncated repeated text in ensemble passages;
  • punctuation and formatting problems that would have appeared especially distracting in print.

The updated text is now available both online and in the paperback edition. The online libretto has also been synchronized with the revised print version so that both editions match closely.

This revision required a careful line-by-line comparison of the Italian original and the English translation, especially in complex ensemble scenes where repeated phrases and overlapping text can easily become inconsistent over time.
