Luigi Cherubini Comes to LibrettoArchive: Medea in Four Languages

Medea by Luigi CherubiniI added a new composer to LibrettoArchive: Luigi Cherubini, along with one of his most important operas, Medea.

The complete libretto is now available in four languages — Italian, German, English, and French. Each language can be viewed on its own or side by side with any of the other three languages, making it easy to compare different versions of the text or follow the opera in the language you prefer.

Cherubini’s opera was originally premiered in Paris in 1797 as Médée, to a French libretto by François-Benoît Hoffmann. Originally written with spoken dialogue, the work later circulated in different versions and languages. The Italian version became particularly famous in the 20th century through Maria Callas, whose performances played an important role in returning Medea to the international operatic repertory.

The Italian–English side-by-side libretto is available here:

I have also published the Italian–English side-by-side edition of Medea as a paperback on Amazon, as part of my DM’s Opera Series.

The book presents Carlo Zangarini’s Italian text alongside an English translation, making it easy to follow the opera while listening, studying the score, or preparing a role.

A PDF sample of the paperback edition is also available on LibrettoArchive, so you can see the layout and formatting before ordering the book.

With Medea, LibrettoArchive gains not only another major opera, but also a new composer and four new complete libretto texts, all available for reading and side-by-side comparison.
