La Traviata: Italian–English Side-by-Side Libretto With Translation

Over the past few days, I returned to one of the most beloved operas in the repertoire: La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

The libretto had already been carefully prepared and published both online at LibrettoArchive and in paperback form. However, I wanted to give it one more thorough review before releasing an updated edition with a refreshed backcover design and several small improvements throughout the book.

As often happens with older opera libretti, the text itself was already in very good condition. No major problems were found, and there were no significant OCR errors or missing passages. Still, a detailed line-by-line comparison of the Italian original and English translation revealed a handful of minor issues worth correcting.

Among the changes made were several small translation refinements, including the correction of a future tense in Flora's dialogue, improved wording in a few passages where the English translation added nuances not present in the original Italian, and more precise translations of several stage directions. I also reviewed the cast list for consistency between the Italian and English versions and corrected a few formatting asymmetries.

Most readers would never notice these details, but for a side-by-side edition, accuracy matters. Small differences in wording can subtly affect the meaning, tone, or dramatic intent of a scene. My goal is always to make the original text and the translation align as closely as possible while remaining natural and readable.

The revised libretto is now available on LibrettoArchive, and a new paperback edition featuring updated design elements has been published as well.

Projects like this remind me that editing opera libretti is often less about finding dramatic errors and more about polishing countless small details. Each revision brings the text a little closer to the original work as Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave intended it to be heard and understood.

I hope opera lovers, students, performers, and collectors will enjoy this improved edition of one of the greatest operas ever written.
