Macbeth is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, with additional scenes by Andrea Maffei for the revised 1865 version. It premiered at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence on 14 March 1847 and was extensively revised for Paris in 1865. As Verdi's first Shakespearean opera, Macbeth marked a turning point in his career, placing dramatic truth above conventional bel canto traditions. The opera is renowned for its dark atmosphere, powerful choruses, the sleepwalking scene of Lady Macbeth, and the witches' supernatural music, and it remains one of the composer's most compelling dramatic works.
