The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, on 3 March 1875, and was not at first particularly successful; its initial run extended to 36 performances. Before this run was concluded, Bizet died suddenly, and thus knew nothing of the opera's later celebrity.

History
- 1875 March 3 — Georges Bizet’s "Carmen" premieres at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart) in Paris.
- 1884 January 9 — Georges Bizet’s "Carmen" received its first Metropolitan Opera (New York) performance on 9 January 1884.
- 1906 April 17 — The Metropolitan Opera performed Bizet's 'Carmen' in San Francisco, featuring Enrico Caruso and Olive Fremstad. The following morning, the city was struck by a devastating earthquake.
