Maria Stuarda is a tragedia lirica in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti with an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Bardari, based on Friedrich Schiller's play Maria Stuart. It premiered at La Scala in Milan on 30 December 1835 after overcoming censorship and revisions. The opera forms the second part of Donizetti's celebrated Tudor trilogy, alongside Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux. Renowned for its intense dramatic confrontations, especially the famous meeting between Mary, Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth I, Maria Stuarda is considered one of the masterpieces of the bel canto repertoire, demanding exceptional vocal artistry from its two leading sopranos.
