August 23 — On This Day in Opera

Jean-Philippe Rameau's opéra-ballet "Les Indes galantes", with a libretto by Louis Fuzelier, received its first performance at the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. The original production comprised the prologue and the first two entrées; later entrées were added in subsequent performances.

"The Turn of the Screw" by Benjamin Britten received its North American premiere at the Stratford Festival in Canada by the English Opera Group.

Belgian operatic baritone Giovanni Inchindi, born Jean-François Hennekindt, died in Brussels. He had sung at the Paris Opéra and Opéra-Comique and created roles in works by Auber, Adam, and Carafa.

Latvian composer Alfrēds Kalniņš was born in Cēsis. He later composed "Baņuta", regarded as the first performed Latvian national opera, as well as the opera "Salinieki".

American soprano Regina Vicarino was born in New York City.

Birth of American mezzo-soprano Minto Cato, notable for her opera career during the Harlem Renaissance, including roles in "Il trovatore", "Aida", and "La traviata".

Czech soprano Teresa Stolz died, acclaimed for her Verdi associations and "Aida" performances.
