Uomini del campo

Luogo e tempo
FIRST ACTATTO PRIMO
Inside the “Polka” saloon.

A large, roughly constructed room, triangular in shape, with two walls forming its sides, the one on the right being longer. The rear corner is cut off by a large opening forming a double door, which can be barred from within. Against one side wall, a small staircase leads to a landing projecting over the room like a balcony, from which hang deerskins and coarse draperies of bright colors. Beneath the balcony, a short passage leads into the “dance hall,” as indicated by a sign in red letters. The passage is guarded by a stuffed bear. Near the rear door stands the bar, with glasses, bottles, etc. Behind it, on one side, is a small cupboard without doors, holding dishes; on the other, a small barrel into which the miners deposit their gold dust. Behind the bar, in the center, is a rectangular window with a checkered frame; above the window, in large letters, are the words: “A real home for the boys.” On the same wall hangs a wanted poster offering 5,000 dollars: the amount is clearly visible, as is the name “Ramerrez” and the signature “Wells Fargo.” From the ceiling hang various kinds of characteristic provisions. On one side is a screen of sheet iron to protect people from gunfire; on the other, a large fireplace. Near the front of the stage stands the faro table, with all the equipment for the game; another table stands toward the rear, and yet another near the bar. (Through the large rear door and the window can be seen the valley, with its wild vegetation of oaks and low-growing conifers, all bathed in the blazing light of sunset. In the distance, the snow-covered mountains fade into shades of gold and violet. The brilliant outdoor light, rapidly diminishing, makes the interior seem even darker. Inside the “Polka,” the outlines of objects are barely visible in the gloom. On the left, near the front of the stage, beside the fireplace, the glowing tip of Jack Rance’s cigar can be seen. Near the staircase on the right, Larkens sits on a barrel, his head buried in his hands. Suddenly he rises, takes a letter from his pocket, looks at it sadly, goes to the bar, takes a postage stamp, affixes it to the letter, drops it into the letterbox, and returns to his seat. Outside, in the distance, cries mingle with the plaintive echoes of songs.)

A real home for the boys„.
Distant voices
To the “Polka”!
To the “Palms”!
“Hello!”
“Hello!”
(a refrain heard from very far away)
“Far away,
Far away,
how she will weep!...”
(Nick comes out from beneath the stairs with a candle he has lit from a small oil lamp. He lights the candles scattered about, climbs onto a stool and lights the central lamp; he lights the lamps in the dance hall, then goes upstairs to light those in the upper room. The “Polka” suddenly comes to life. Groups of miners begin to enter, returning from the camp.)

Voci lontane
Alla “Polka”!
Alle “Palme”!
“Holla!”
«Hallo!»
(un ritornello lontanissimo)
“Là lontano,
Là lontano,
quanto piangerà!... ”

Harry, Joe, Bello
and others (entering)
“Hello,” Nick!

Nick
Good evening, boys!

Sid and Happy, followed by Billy
“Hello!”

Nick
“Hello!”

Joe, Bello and the others
(humming an American refrain)
“Dooda, dooda, day—”

Harry
(sitting down at the faro table)
Cigars, Nick!

Joe
(slapping a hand on the table)
Whiskey!

Nick
Coming!

Harry, Joe, Bello
ed altri (entrando)
“Hallo”, Nick!

Nick
Buona sera, ragazzi

Sid e Happy, seguiti da Billy
“Hallo”!

Nick
“Hallo”!

Joe, Bello e gli altri
(canterellando un ritornello americano)
“Dooda, dooda, day-”

Harry
(sedendosi al tavolo del faraone)
Sigari, Nick!

Joe
(battendo una mano sul tavolo)
whisky!

Nick
Son qua.

Bello
Minnie?

Nick
She’s well.

Sid
(having seated himself at the faro table,
to the others gathered around)

Boys, a game of faro! Who’s in?

Harry
I’m in.

Happy
I’m in too.

Joe
Me too.

Bello
“All right!” Who’s dealing?

Happy
(pointing to Sid)
Sid.

Bello
That’s bad news.

Sid
(throwing the cards contemptuously onto the table)
Anyone who wants to shuffle, go ahead.
(Harry shuffles the cards)

Joe
(slapping Sid with his open hand
on the shoulder)

“Hello!”

(Sonora and Trin enter, followed by several miners carrying saddles and equipment, which they noisily throw to the ground; some then go upstairs to the upper rooms, while others head into the dance hall and gather around the gaming table.)

Bello
Minnie?

Nick
Sta bene.

Sid

Chi ci sta?

Harry
Io ci sto.

Happy
Anch’io ci sto.

Joe
Anch’io.

Bello
“All right!” Chi è che tiene banco?

Happy
(indicando Sid)
Sid.

Bello
Brutto affare.

Sid
(gettando con sprezzo le carte sul tavolo)
Chi vuol mischiare, mischi.
(Harry mischia le carte)

Joe
(battendo con la palma aperta
sulla spalla di Sid)

“Holla!”

Sonora and Trin
Supper, Nick!
What have you got?

Nick
Not much. Pickled oysters...

Sonora
Whatever you’ve got.

Trin
... With whiskey.

Sonora
(clapping Larkens on the shoulders)
“Hello,” Larkens!

Larkens
(sadly, without lifting his head from his hands)
“Hello!”

The miners
(getting ready to play)
Let’s go!...

Sid
Place your bets.
(Nick, bustling about, carries bottles and glasses back and forth between the upper room and the dance hall. He also sets the middle table for Sonora and Trin.)

Joe
(placing a bet)
On the “garden”!

Harry
(doing the same)
On the low cards!

Bello
(doing the same)
On the high cards!

Sonora e Trin
Da cena, Nick!
Che cosa c’è?

Nick
C’è poco. Ostriche sott’aceto...

Sonora
Quello che c’è.

Trin
... Con whisky.

Sonora
(battendo sulle spalle di Larkens )
“Hallo”, Larkens!

Larkens
“Hallo”!

I minatori
(preparandosi al giuoco)
Andiamo!...

Sid

Joe
(puntando)
Al “giardino”!

Harry
(c. s.)
Alle “piccole”!

Bello
(c. s.)
Alle “grandi”!

The miners
(from the balcony)
Nick, drinks!

Sonora
(to Trin, sitting down
at the table set for them)
Shall I wait for you?

Trin
(from the group of gamblers, to Sonora)
Coming...

Happy
Chips!

Sid
A king... An ace.

Bello
(angrily)
Damn it!

Rance
(to Nick as he passes by,
pointing toward Larkens,
who has lowered his head onto his arms)

What’s wrong with Larkens? Is he ill?

Nick
His usual trouble. Homesickness.
Longing for his homeland. He thinks of his old
Cornwall and his mother far away, waiting for him...

Rance
(relighting his cigar)
What a cursed land, this golden West!

Nick
He’s got gold fever.
Gold poisons the blood of anyone who looks at it.

Rance
And Minnie, why is she taking so long?

(At the faro table,
the gambling grows more intense.)

I minatori
(dal ballatoio)
Nick, da bere!

Sonora
(a Trin, sedendo
al tavolino apparecchiato)
Ti aspetto?

Trin
(dal gruppo dei giuocatori, a Sonora)
Vengo...

Happy
Gettoni!

Sid
Un re... Un asso.

Bello
(con rabbia)
Maledetto.

Rance
(a Nick che gli passa accanto,
accennandogli Larkens,
che ha chinato il capo sulle braccia)

Larkens che ha? Sta male?

Nick
Il suo solito male. Nostalgia.

Rance
E Minnie, come tarda!

(Al tavolo del faraone
il giuoco continua più intenso)

Sid
(to Happy, indicating his bet)
How many dollars?

Happy
Ten.

Sid
(giving him his change)
And ninety makes a hundred.
Jack... Queen...

Joe
Hurrah! Hurray!

Happy
(angrily)
Damn it!

Trin
Damned Australian!

Joe
The three never wins.

Trin
Everything on the three!

Sid
Three... Seven...
(The gamblers bet more and more fiercely; muttered curses and the jingling of coins can be heard.)

Trin
Lost it all. “Goodbye!”
(He leaves the gaming table and sits down at the one where Sonora is eating. At the gaming table, arguments and protests grow increasingly heated. Nick rushes back and forth carrying drinks, cigars, etc. Some miners go upstairs, while others come down; some head to the bar, while others linger at the gaming table, watching the play. More miners of various kinds enter. Billy stealthily approaches the bar, steals some cigars, and leaves. Great patches of stars appear in the cloudy sky.)

Sid
(a Happy, indicando la puntata)
Quanti dollari?

Happy
Dieci.

Sid
(dandogli il resto)
E novanta, fan cento.
Fante... Regina...

Joe
Hurrà! Evviva!

Happy
(con rabbia)
Sacramento!

Trin
Australiano d’inferno!

Joe
Il tre non vince mai.

Trin
Tutto sul tre!

Sid
Tre... Sette...

Trin
Tutto perso. “Good bye!”

Nick
(returning from the dance hall,
calling loudly to everyone)

In the dance hall, boys,
they want you to dance!

Sonora
Dance? They must be crazy!
I don’t dance with men!
(to Trin)
Don’t you agree?

Trin
Right.

Sonora
(rising, speaking privately to Nick,
who returns from the bar with the cigar box)

Has Minnie finally made up her mind about me?

Nick
(craftily, playing along with him)
Certainly: I’ve gathered
that you’re her favorite!...

Sonora
(beaming with delight, calling loudly to his companions)
Cigars for everyone!

All
Hurrah!

(Nick hurries to fetch the cigar box and hands out cigars; from the dance hall emerge two young men, dancing.)

Nick
(rientrando dalla sala da ballo,
forte a tutti)

Nella sala, ragazzi,
vi si vuole a ballare!

Sonora
A ballare? Son pazzi!
Io non ballo con uomini!
(a Trin)
Ti pare?

Trin
Giusto.

Sonora
(alzandosi, in disparte a Nick

Minnie infine s’è decisa per me?

Nick
(furbescamente, secondandolo)
Certo: ho capito
che siete il preferito!...

Sonora
(gongolando, forte ai compagni)
Sigari a tutti!

Tutti

Trin
(stopping Nick, speaking privately in a low voice)
Nick, what did she tell you?

Nick
(craftily, playing along with him too)
Well, if I’ve understood correctly,
you’re her favorite.

Trin
(beaming with delight)
Whiskey for everyone!

All
Hurrah!

(Nick goes around serving bottles and glasses)

Jake Wallace
(singing outside)
“What are my dear old folks doing far away,
far away, what are they doing back home?
Sad and lonely, my dear old folks
will weep, thinking I’ll never return!”

Nick
(appearing in the doorway)
Boys, let me introduce Jake Wallace,
the minstrel of the camp!
(But already the nostalgic song has touched all those greedy and rough souls: heads are raised, ears are listening intently; the game slows. Those upstairs lean out to watch; in the silence, the clinking of gambling chips gradually fades away. Jake Wallace, the wandering singer, appears in the doorway, singing and accompanying himself on the banjo.)

Jake Wallace
(entering)
“My mother...

(He stops, astonished by the silence that greets him. All the miners, their faces turned toward him, gesture with their hands for him to continue.)

Trin
(fermando Nick, in disparte, sottovoce)
Nick, che ti ha detto?

Nick
(furbescamente anche a lui)
Mah! Se ho ben capito
voi siete il preferito.

Trin
(gongolando)
Whisky per tutti!

Tutti
Hurrà!

(Nick porta in giro bottiglie e bicchieri)

Jake Wallace
(di fuori cantando)
“Che faranno i vecchi miei là lontano,
là lontano, che faran laggiù?
Tristi e soli i vecchi miei
piangeranno, penseranno ch’io non torni più!”

Nick

Jake
(continuing)
... what will she do
if I don’t return,
if I don’t return?
How she will weep!”

Some miners
(at the gaming table)
At her loom she’ll weave
linen and sorrow
into the shroud
that will cover her...”

Some miners
(from the balcony of the upper room)
And my dog, after so long...

Jake Wallace
My dog...

Other miners
(upstairs)
my dog,
will he recognize me?...”
(An almost desperate homesickness takes hold of everyone. Someone who has begun accompanying the song by beating his fist with dull thuds upon the table suddenly stops.)

Harry
(bursting out as though with a sob)
“Oh, my home beside the stream...

The miners
(at the table)
far away...

The miners
(upstairs)
far away...

All
(softly)
... Who will ever see you again?”

Jake
(continuando)
... che farà
s’io non torno,
s’io non torno?
Quanto piangerà!”

Alcuni minatori
(dal tavolo del giuoco)
Al telaio tesserà
lino e duolo
pel lenzuolo
che la coprirà...”

Alcuni minatori
(dal ballatoio della sala superiore)
E il mio cane dopo tanto...

Jake Wallace
Il mio cane...

Altri minatori

Harry
(prorompendo come in un singhiozzo)
“O mia casa, al rivo accanto...

I minatori
(dal tavolo)
là lontano...

I minatori
(di sopra)
là lontano...

Tutti
(sommessamente)
... Chi ti rivedrà?”

(The song dies away in anguish. Silence. Stirred by the nostalgic song, Larkens has shaken off his painful stupor and risen. At the last words of the chorus, he bursts into tears. Jake Wallace enters the room and watches the scene without taking part.)

Voices
- Jim, why are you crying? - Jim!...
- What’s wrong?...

Larkens
(in tears, pleading)
I can’t bear it anymore,
I can’t bear it anymore, boys! I’m sick,
I don’t know what’s wrong... Send me away,
oh, send me away! I’m ruined!
I’m tired of picks and mines!
I want the plow, I want my mother!...

(Everyone gathers around him, deeply moved, comforting him. Sonora takes a tray and invites everyone to contribute money for Larkens. Everyone gives except Sid. Someone tosses coins down from the upper balcony.)

(Il canto si spegne angosciosamente. Silenzio.

Voci
- Jim, perché piangi? - Jim!...
- Che hai?...

Larkens
(in lacrime, supplicando)
Non reggo più,
non reggo più, ragazzi! Son malato,
non so di che... Mandatemi,
ah, mandatemi via!

Tutti offrono, meno Sid. Dal ballatoio superiore qualcuno getta delle monete).

Sonora
To send him back home...

Voices
Take this... - Here... - Five dollars!
Another five!... - Here, Son...
And these too...

Sonora
(to Larkens)
Take heart!

(He empties the contents of the tray into Larkens’s hands, who, overwhelmed and bewildered, offers greetings and smiles to everyone through his tears.)

Sonora
Per rimandarlo a casa...

Voci
Prendi... - To’... - Cinque dollari!
Altri cinque!... - A te, Son...
Anche questi...

Sonora
(a Larkens)
Coraggio!

Larkens
Thank you, thank you, boys!...
(Larkens leaves; a group of miners takes up the melody of the song again. Billy stealthily approaches the bar, trying to steal a drink; Nick sees him and drives him away. Billy then crouches on the floor, near the front of the stage, playing solitaire. Jake Wallace enters the dance hall with several men. Around Sid, the faro game has resumed.)

Voices
All bets in?... - On the four... - On the three...
I’ll double... - Bets are placed...
No more bets!... - Two!... King!

Bello
(having caught Sid cheating,
slams his fist hard on the table)

That’s outright theft!

Sonora
Hands up!

Trin
Cheat!

Bello
Arms up!
(he picks up the deck of cards
and throws it onto the table)

Look!

Harry
Tie him up!

Sonora
String him up!

Larkens
Grazie, grazie ragazzi!...

Voci
Va tutto?... - Al quattro... - Al tre...
Raddoppio... - Giuoco fatto...
Niente va più!... - Due!... Re!

Bello
(che ha colto Sid a barare
dà un gran pugno sul tavolo)

Questa è da ladro!

Sonora
Su le mani!

Trin
Baro!

Bello
Su le braccia!
(prende il mazzo di carte
e lo getta sul tavolo)

Guardate!

Harry
Sia legato!

Sonora
Al laccio!

Voices
- Hang the thief!
- Hang the cheat!

(Sid is seized and dragged to the center of the stage. Everyone crowds around him, roughing him up, even Billy, who has risen from the floor. Jake Rance, who had gone out, appears in the doorway of the dance hall, watching the scene with cold indifference.)

Sid
(pleading)
For pity’s sake...

Jack Rance
(approaching)
What’s going on?

Bello
He cheated!
He’ll get what he deserves!...

Voices
Hang him!...

Rance
(smiling, he slowly takes his handkerchief from his pocket, unfolds it unhurriedly, and wipes his shoes, resting one foot on a chair.)
Come on, boys!
Calm down a little... Here... let’s see.

Voices
Hang Sid!
Put him to death!

(Everyone closes in threateningly around the trembling Sid once more.)

Voci

Andiamo, ragazzi!
Un po’ di calma... Qua... vediamo.

Voci
Al laccio, Sid.
A morte!

Rance
(holding them back, coldly)
Come now! What is death, after all?
A kick into the darkness, and good night!
I know a more fitting punishment.
Give me his card...
(They give Rance the two of spades;
he pins it to Sid’s chest with a pin,
over his heart.)

Over his heart, as one wears a flower.
He’ll never touch cards again. This is the sign.
If he dares to remove it, hang him.
(to Bello, authoritatively)
Tomorrow, spread the word around the camp.
(to Sid)
Go!

Sid
(whimpering, pleading for mercy)
Boys, have mercy!...

All
(mocking him and pushing him out)
Get out of here!
Out! - Get out! - Away with you! - Thief! - Boo! Boo!

(They kick him out; Billy, also afraid of getting a kick from Rance, slips out cautiously. Rance, as though nothing had happened, sits down at the faro table, inviting the others to join him. Harry, Joe, and a miner sit at the table on the right, drinking.)

Rance
(trattenendoli, freddo)
Evvia!
So un castigo più degno.
Datemi la sua carta...
(Dànno a Rance il due di picche;

(a Sid)
Va!

Sid
(piagnucoloso, raccomandandosi)
Ragazzi, siate buoni!...

Tutti
(sbertandolo e spingendolo fuori)
Via di qua!
Via! - Fuori! - Via di qua! - Ladro! - Uh! Uh!

Rance
(to Sonora and Trin)
A game of poker!
(to Nick)
Nick, chips!

(Nick brings the chips; they begin playing. Ashby enters.)

Ashby
Sheriff, hello!

Rance
(to the miners)
Make way, boys!
Let me introduce Mr. Ashby of the Wells Fargo Agency.

(Ashby shakes hands with Rance, Sonora, Trin, and the others nearby. He greets those farther away with a wave of his hand, and they respond in the same way.)

Ashby
Nick, bring me a drink.
(to those nearby)
How’s the girl doing?

All
(flattered)
She’s well, thank you.

(Nick brings four whiskeys to the table.)

Rance
Any news of the bandit?

Ashby
I’ve been watching for him for three months; he can’t be far away...
(Nick leaves.)

Rance
(to Ashby)
They say he steals like a fine gentleman!
Is he Spanish?

Rance
(a Sonora e Trin)
Un poker!
(a Nick)
Nick, gettoni!

(Nick porta; giuocano. Entra Ashby)

Ashby
Sceriffo, “hallo!”

Rance
(ai minatori)
Ragazzi, fate largo!
Presento mister Ashby, dell’Agenzia Wells Fargo.

Ashby
Nick, portami da bere.
(ai vicini)
Come sta la ragazza?

Tutti
(lusingati)
Grazie, bene.

(Nick porta quattro whisky al tavolo)

Rance
Che nuove del bandito?

Ashby
(Nick esce)

Rance
(a Ashby)
Dicon che ruba come un gran signore!
È spagnuolo?

Ashby
The gang
of thieves he commands
is Mexican: a tough bunch of scoundrels,
cunning, ready for anything. Be on your guard.
I’m going to lie down. I’m tired, every bone aches.
Good night, everyone!
(He takes a blanket from beneath the stairs and lies down on the sacks, paying no attention to what is happening around him. Nick returns with a tray full of glasses of whiskey with lemon.)

Trin
(to Nick)
What’s this?

Nick
Minnie’s treating!

All
(with affection)
Long live Minnie!
Long live our Minnie!

Rance
(self-importantly)
Mrs. Rance, before long.

Sonora
(bursting out)
No, you Chinese-faced fool!
Minnie is making a fool of you!

Rance
(rising, livid with anger)
Boy, that’s the whiskey talking.
I pity you... Until now, no one,
understand, has ever made a fool of Jack Rance!
And you’re lucky I pay no heed to insults
from drunkards!

Ashby
La banda
di ladri, a cui comanda,
è messicana: gentaccia gagliarda,
astuta, pronta a tutto. State in guardia.
Io mi sdraio. Son stanco, ho l’ossa rotte.
A tutti, buona notte!

Trin
(a Nick)
Che cos’è?

Nick
Offre Minnie!

Tutti
(con sentimento d’affetto)
Viva Minnie!
Viva la nostra Minnie!

Rance
(con sussiego)
Mistress Rance, fra poco.

Sonora
(scattando)
No, faccia di cinese!
Minnie si prende giuoco di te!

Rance
(alzandosi, livido)
Ragazzo, è il whisky che lavora.
Ti compatisco... Di Jack Rance finora
nessuno, intendi, s’è mai preso giuoco!
E buon per te ch’io non curi le offese
degli ubriachi!

Sonora
(draws his pistol,
but is restrained by his companions.
Nick and several others,
who have returned, take shelter
behind the sheet-metal screen,
to avoid being struck by gunfire.)

You old gambling shark!
Minnie is making a fool of you!

Rance
(taking a step forward)
Prove it!

Sonora
(breaking free)
She’s making a fool of you, yellow-face!

Rance
Ah, you wretch!

(He lunges at Sonora; they grapple; the others try to separate them, but before they can, a woman suddenly leaps in and, with fierce strength, violently pulls them apart, snatching the pistol from Sonora’s hand. It is Minnie. Bello follows her, stopping by the bar to watch admiringly. A shout rises from every corner; the anger instantly subsides; only Rance withdraws, looking thoroughly gloomy, to his chair on the left.)

All
(enthusiastically, waving their hats)
“Hello,” Minnie! “Hello,” Minnie!

Minnie
(stepping forward, authoritatively)
What’s been going on?...
(sternly, to Sonora)
You again, Sonora?

Trin
Nothing, Minnie; just nonsense... We were joking!

Minnie
(angrily)
You’ll ruin everything! Shame on you!...

Sonora
(estrae la pistola,
ma è trattenuto dai compagni.
Nick e qualche altro
che sono rientrati si barricano
dietro lo schermo di lamiera,
come per evitare i colpi di pistola)

Vecchio biscazziere!
Minnie ti burla!

Rance
(avanzandosi d’un passo)
Provalo!

Sonora
(svincolandosi)
Ti burla, muso giallo!

Rance
Ah, miserabile!

Tutti
(con entusiasmo, agitando i cappelli)
“Hallo” Minnie! “Hallo” Minnie!

Minnie
(avanzandosi, con autorità)
Che cos’è stato?...
(severa, a Sonora)
Sempre tu, Sonora?

Trin
Nulla, Minnie; sciocchezze... Si scherzava!

Minnie
(adirata)
Voi manderete tutto alla malora! Vergogna!...

Joe
(offering her a small bouquet of flowers)
Minnie...

Minnie
I won’t teach anymore.

All
No, Minnie, no!...

Sonora
(embarrassed)
You know, when you’re late,
we get bored... And then...

Minnie
(she shakes her head and smiles, her anger softened;
approaching the bar, she notices Bello gazing dreamily)

Bello, what are you doing? What are you looking at?

Bello
(startled, he smiles awkwardly)
Nothing...

Some miners
(laughing)
He was looking... at you!

Joe
(offering her the bouquet)
Minnie, I picked them
along Black Creek... Back in my hometown,
there are so many! The meadows are full of them...

Minnie
Oh, thank you, thank you, Joe!...

Sonora
(taking a folded ribbon from his pocket)
A traveling merchant came through camp today
from San Francisco... He had lace and ribbons.
(unfolding the ribbon with affectionate gallantry)
This is for you... See, it’s crimson,
just like your lips...

Joe
(presentandole un mazzolino di fiori)
Minnie...

Minnie
Non farò più scuola.

Tutti
No, Minnie, no!...

Sonora
(imbarazzato)
Sai, quando tu ritardi
ci si annoia... Ed allora...

Minnie
(scuote la testa e sorride rabbonita;
avvicinandosi al banco, vede Bello in contemplazione)

Bello, che fai? Che guardi?

Bello
(si scuote, sorridendo impacciato)
Nulla...

Alcuni
(ridendo)
Guardava... te!

Joe
(offrendole il mazzolino)
Minnie, li ho colti
lungo il Torrente Nero... Al mio paese
ce ne son tanti! I prati ne son folti...

Minnie
Oh, grazie, grazie, Joe!...

Sonora
(levandosi di tasca un nastro ripiegato)
È passato pel campo oggi un merciaio
di San Francisco... Aveva trine e nastri.
(con galanteria affettuosa, svolgendo il nastro)
Questo è per voi... Vedete, è color porpora
come la vostra bocca...

Harry
(like Sonora, unfolding a silk handkerchief)
And this is blue, like your eyes!

Minnie
Thank you, thank you!...

Ashby
(having risen and approached
the bar, raising his glass)

Compliments of Wells Fargo!

Minnie
(clinking her glass against Ashby’s)
Hip! Hip!...
(offering cigars to Ashby)
“Regalias”? “Auroras”? “Eurekas”?

Ashby
(with affected gallantry)
If you choose them, their quality
doesn’t matter. Each one
will carry for me the fragrance
of the hand that touches it!

Nick
(to Minnie, quietly)
Please, make the rounds;
every word you say, every smile
means another drink sold!

Minnie
(patting him on the shoulder)
You sly tongue!
(noticing Rance standing apart)
Good evening, Sheriff!

Harry

Hip! Hip!...
(offrendo sigari ad Ashby)
“Regalias”? “Auroras”? “Eurekas”?

Ashby
(con galanteria affettata)
Se li scegliete voi, la qualità
non conta nulla. Ognuno
avrà per me il profumo
della man che li tocca!

Nick
(a Minnie, sommessamente)
Vi prego, andate in giro
ogni vostra parola, ogni sorriso
è una consumazione!

Minnie
(battendolo sulla spalla)
Mala lingua!
(scorgendo Rance in disparte)
Vi do la buona sera, sceriffo!

Rance
Good evening, Minnie.

Sonora
(handing Minnie a small bag of gold)
Cross off my account!
(Minnie cancels Sonora’s account, weighs the gold,
marks it and puts it into the barrel.)

Ashby
(to Rance)
With these gangs roaming about, it’s madness
to keep the gold in here... At the Agency,
it would be much safer.
(He continues talking with Rance, who is seated at the faro table. Minnie has taken a book from a drawer behind the bar and moved to the center of the room. All the miners follow her and form a circle around her. Some remain standing; two bring a bench over and sit down. Minnie also sits down and opens the book; it is the Bible. Rance and Ashby watch silently from a distance.)

Minnie
(leafing through the Bible)
Where were we?... Ruth... Ezekiel... No...
Esther?... Ah, here’s the place.
“Psalm Fifty-One, by David...”
(to Harry, who has sat down)
Harry, do you remember who David was?

Harry
(rising comically,
like a schoolboy reciting his lesson)

He was a king in ancient times, a true hero
who, when he was still a boy, armed himself
with a donkey’s jawbone,
faced a great giant and killed him...

(Joe suddenly jumps up, noisily opens a large folding knife and... calmly begins sharpening a pencil.)

Rance
Buona sera, Minnie.

Sonora

Ashby
(a Rance)
tener l’oro qua dentro... All’Agenzia
starebbe molto meglio.

Minnie
(sfogliando la Bibbia)
Dove eravamo?... Ruth... Ezechiel... No...
Ester?... Ah, ecco il segno.
“Salmo cinquantunesimo, di David...”
(a Harry che si è seduto)
Harry, ricordi chi era David?

Harry
(alzandosi, grottescamente,

Minnie
(laughing)
What confusion!... Sit down.
(Harry sits down, embarrassed)
Take your place, Joe!
Now let’s read. “Verse two:
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be pure...”

Trin
(innocently)
What is this hyssop, Minnie?

Minnie
It’s an herb that grows in the East...

Joe
(gently)
And doesn’t it grow here too?

Minnie
Yes, Joe, each of us keeps a little
bush of it in our heart...

Joe
(laughing)
In our heart?

Minnie
(seriously)
In our heart.
(continuing to read)
“Wash me, and I shall be white as snow.
Place within my breast
a pure heart, and renew in me
a noble spirit...”
(breaking off)
That means, boys, that there is not
a sinner in the world
for whom the path to redemption is closed...
May each of you keep within your heart
this supreme truth of love.
(Ashby and Rance have drawn closer and are also listening. Billy enters with his stealthy gait, approaches the bar and quickly swallows the dregs from two or three glasses, licking their rims.)

Minnie
(ridendo)
Che confusione!... Siedi.
(Harry siede confuso)
A posto, Joe!
Ora leggiamo. “Versetto secondo
Aspergimi d’issopo e sarò mondo...”

Trin
(ingenuo)
Che cos’è quest’issopo, Minnie?

Minnie
È un’erba che fa in Oriente...

Joe
(dolcemente)
E qui da noi non fa?

Minnie

Joe
(ridendo)
Nel cuore?

Minnie
(seria)
Nel cuore.
(continuando a leggere)
“Lavami e sarò bianco come neve.
Poni dentro al mio petto
un puro cuore, e rinnovella in me
uno spirito eletto...”
(interrompendosi)

Trin
(laughing)
Look, Minnie!

Minnie
What’s going on?

Joe
Billy’s washing the glasses!

Billy
(laughing slyly
and patting himself on the chest)

Good...

Minnie
Billy!

Nick
(trying to kick him)
Get out of here, you rascal!

Billy
(dodging the kick and approaching Minnie,
with feigned humility)

Mistress...

Trin
(ridendo)
Guarda, Minnie!

Minnie
Che c’è?

Joe
Billy lava i bicchieri!

Billy
(ridendo con un riso sornione
e battendosi una mano sul petto)

Buono...

Minnie
Billy!

Nick
(allungandogli una pedata)
Va via di qua, briccone!

Billy
(lo scansa, e si avvicina a Minnie,
con umiltà ipocrita)

Padrona...

Minnie
What are you doing here? Do you know your lesson?

Billy
Lesson, Billy?...
(laughing foolishly)
Heh...

Minnie
Let’s hear you: count to ten.

Billy
... One... two... three...
four... five, six, seven... jack, queen and king...

(Everyone bursts out laughing. Minnie gets up.)

Minnie
You silly little fool!
And Wowkle? Have you married her?

Billy
(with a sly expression)
Too late marry now... We have baby...
(Another burst of laughter greets this remark. Minnie calls him over. He approaches reluctantly. She takes the stolen cigars from his pocket.)

Minnie
This good-for-nothing seduced her one day...
Scoundrel! And they have a six-month-old baby!
There’ll be trouble if you don’t marry her tomorrow!
Now, out you go!
(She grabs him by the ear and, amid everyone’s laughter, puts him out. She returns to the bar. Rance, who has been watching her every move, approaches the bar. Suddenly, the galloping of a horse is heard.)

Nick
(rushing to the door)
The mail!

Minnie
Che fai qui? Sai la lezione?

Billy
Lezione, Billy?...
(ridendo ebete)
He’...

Minnie
Sentiamo: conta fino a dieci.

Billy
... Uno... due... tre...
quattro... cinque, sei, sette... fante, regina e re...

(Tutti scoppiano in una risata. Minnie si alza)

Minnie
Che stupida marmotta!
E Wowkle? L’hai sposata?

Billy
(con aria sorniona)
Ora tardi sposare... Abbiamo bimbo...

Nick
(accorrendo alla porta)
La posta!

Postboy
(outside, appearing in the doorway on horseback)
“Hello,” boys!

(he hands the letters to Nick, who carries them inside)
Be on your guard! A suspicious-looking half-breed
has been seen on the trail...

(Nick distributes the mail: a dispatch for Ashby; letters for Happy, Bello, and Joe; a newspaper for Harry. Ashby opens the dispatch and reads it in astonishment.)

Ashby
Postboy!

(The postboy enters. Everyone gathers around him;
Ashby questions him.)

Ashby
Do you know a certain Nina? Nina Micheltorena?

Minnie
(interrupting, with the air of a well-informed woman)
She’s a woman who pretends to be Spanish,
a native of Cachuca, a temptress
who uses an awful lot
of black makeup
to give her eyes a languishing look.
... Just ask the boys!
(Trin and Sonora, standing nearby, exchange embarrassed looks and shake their heads in denial. The postboy leaves with Nick. Minnie returns to the bar. Happy, Bello, Joe, and others, in various positions, some farther back, some nearer the front, read through their letters. Harry reads the newspaper. Ashby and Rance move toward the front of the stage.)

Postiglione
(fuori, apparendo sulla porta, a cavallo)
“Hallo”, ragazzi!

State attenti!

Ashby
Sheriff, tonight I’ll have Ramerrez in a noose...

Rance
How?

Ashby
(showing him the folded dispatch)
That adventuress tells me she knows the bandit’s hideout,
and that tonight at midnight I should go
to the “Palms” to meet her.

Rance
(doubtfully)
That Micheltorena woman is a scoundrel.
Ashby, don’t trust her: it’s a dangerous gamble.

Ashby
(winking)
Hmm! The vengeance of women in love...
In any case, Rance, I’ll accept the invitation.
(Rance and Ashby withdraw once more near the foot of the stairs, continuing their conversation. Scattered here and there, the miners continue reading their letters; one angrily tears up his letter after reading it. Another kisses his and carefully puts it into his wallet; others read and put away their letters, saying: “All is well.” At the bar, Minnie chats playfully with Sonora and Trin.)

Ashby
Sceriffo, questa sera ho Ramerrez al laccio...

Rance
Come?

Ashby

Bello
(reading a letter)
Ketty’s getting married? And who’s marrying my Ketty?
Listen! The watchmaker who lives next door...
That deaf old man!... Well!...
(sighing as though recalling many memories)
Poor Ketty!

Happy
(reading softly)
“... Even the parrot has grown disheartened;
he no longer cries: ‘Good morning, little brother!’
but calls out: ‘Happy!’ and then says: ‘Gone away!’...”

Harry
(reading the newspaper)
Fires, wars, earthquakes, floods...
So much happening in the world!... And in my village,
what are they doing back home? Are they all well?...

Bello
(leggendo una lettera)
Ketty sposa? E chi sposa la mia Ketty?
Senti! L’orologiaio suo vicino...
Quel vecchio sordo!... Mah!...
(sospiro di chi ricorda molte cose)
Povera Ketty!

Happy
(leggendo, sottovoce)
“... Perfino il pappagallo s’è avvilito;
non grida più: “Buongiorno, fratellino!”
ma chiama: te Happy” e poi dice: “Partito!”...

Harry
(leggendo il giornale)
Incendi, guerre, terremoti, piene...
Quante cose nel mondo!... E al mio villaggio,
che faranno laggiù? Staranno bene?...

Joe
(reading)
“Unfortunately, Joe, there’s some sad news...”
(He continues reading softly, then pounds the table with his fist and suddenly throws himself onto a bench, his head in his hands, moaning.)

All
(gathering around him)
- Joe, what’s wrong? - Bad news? - Come on, take heart!

Joe
(he rises, throws his cap to the ground,
in grief-stricken anger)

And now Grandma is gone too!

(He is about to say more, but restrains himself,
bites his finger, wipes his eyes
with the back of his hand and orders curtly)

Whiskey!
(He goes to the bar where Minnie is, drinks, and leaves.)
(Nick has gone out. Ashby shakes hands with Rance and Minnie, waves goodbye to the others, and leaves. Rance remains at the bar and watches Minnie.)

Nick
(returning)
There’s a stranger outside...

Minnie
Who is it?

Joe
(leggendo)

Nick
(rientrando)
C’è fuori uno straniero...

Minnie
Chi è?

Nick
I’ve never seen him before...
He looks like he’s from San Francisco.
He asked me for whiskey and water.

Minnie
Whiskey and water? What kind of nonsense is that?

Nick
That’s exactly what I told him.
At the “Polka,” we drink our whiskey straight.

Minnie
Well, let him come. We’ll set him straight.

(Nick goes out again. Three or four miners remain around a table playing dice; after a while they leave; little by little, everyone drifts away, some into the dance hall, some outside, others upstairs. Only Minnie and Rance remain. Rance moves closer to Minnie, speaking in a voice trembling with desire.)

Rance
I love you, Minnie...

Minnie
(smiling, indifferently)
Don’t say that...

Rance
A thousand dollars, right here, if you’ll kiss me!...

Minnie
(laughing nervously)
Rance, you’re making me laugh... Come now,
stop it!

Nick
Non l’ho mai visto...
Sembra di San Francisco.
Mi ha chiesto un whisky ed acqua.

Minnie
Whisky ed acqua? Che son questi pasticci?

Nick
È quello che gli ho detto.
Alla “Polka” si beve il whisky schietto.

Minnie
Bene, venga.

Rance
Ti voglio bene, Minnie...

Minnie
(sorridendo, indifferente)
Non lo dite...

Rance
Mille dollari, qui, se tu mi baci!...

Minnie
(nervosa, ridendo)
Rance, voi mi fate ridere... Su via,
finitela!

Rance
(pressing her insistently)
You can’t stay here alone!
I’ll marry you...

Minnie
(drawing away from him, ironically)
And what will your wife say?...

Rance
If you wish it, she’ll never see me again!

Minnie
(proudly)
Rance, enough! You’re insulting me!
I live alone like this, as you well know,
because that’s how I like it...
(reaching into her bodice and flashing
a pistol in Rance’s face)

(quietly, but firmly)
with this trusty, faithful companion,
who will never abandon me...
Rance, leave me in peace.
(She puts the pistol back into her bodice. Rance silently leaves the bar, sits at the faro table and nervously shuffles the cards.)

Minnie
(glancing at him sideways, then approaching him)
Are you angry, Rance? Why? I’ve told you
exactly what I think...

Rance
(incalzandola)
Tu non puoi star qui sola!
Ti sposo...

Minnie
(scansandolo, ironica)
E vostra moglie, che dirà?...

Rance

Minnie
(con fierezza)
Rance, basta! M’offendete!
Vivo sola così, voi lo sapete,
perché così mi piace...
(frugandosi in petto e facendo luccicare
in faccia a Rance una pistola)

(sommessamente, ma con forza)
con questa compagnia sicura e buona,
che mai non m’abbandona...
Rance, lasciatemi in pace.

Siete in collera, Rance? Perché? Vi ho detto
il mio pensiero schietto...

Rance
(he throws the cards onto the table with a violent gesture, then speaks in a harsh, cutting voice)
Minnie, I left my home,
beyond the mountains, across another sea:
not a single regret, Minnie, followed me,
not a single regret could I leave behind!
No one ever loved me, nor have I loved anyone,
nothing in life has ever given me pleasure!
Within my breast I carry a gambler’s heart,
bitter and poisoned,
that laughs at love and fate:
I set out on my journey,
drawn only by the lure of gold...
Gold alone has never deceived me.
Now, for one kiss from you, I’d give up a fortune!

Minnie
(dreamily)
Love is something else...

Rance
(mockingly)
Poetry!

Rance
amaro e avvelenato,
che ride dell’amore e del destino:
mi son messo in cammino
