Médée is an opera by Luigi Cherubini, first performed in Paris in 1797 to a French libretto by François-Benoît Hoffmann. Based on the ancient Greek myth of Medea, it tells the tragic story of a woman abandoned by Jason and driven to a devastating revenge. Originally written in French with spoken dialogue, the opera later became widely known in an Italian version with sung recitatives. This version gained particular fame in the 20th century through Maria Callas, whose performances helped restore Médée to the international operatic repertory.
